Donna Aldea, the Queens district attorney’s counsel for special litigation, has joined Barket, Marion, Epstein & Kearon, a Garden City criminal defense firm. Aldea, who has been a prosecutor for nearly 15 years and has handled a number of high-profile cases, joined the firm as a partner and will head its appellate and post-conviction group.

Aldea, 40, handled the appellate challenge to the district attorney’s pre-arraignment interview program in three consolidated cases, including People v. Dunbar, 2010-04786, and she will continue to represent the prosecution in those appeals. The office is awaiting a decision from the state Court of Appeals on its leave application. Earlier this year, the Appellate Division, Second Department, ordered retrials for the three defendants, saying the program violated their constitutional rights (Jan. 31). Aldea said she will work on the pre-arraignment appeal and other appeals for the office on a pro bono basis.
