A federal judge has vacated a conviction for a woman facing deportation, holding her former attorney "affirmatively misrepresented," albeit with "the best of intentions," the immigration consequences of her guilty plea.

Eastern District Judge Raymond Dearie (See Profile) on April 12 tossed the 2004 mail fraud conviction of Joy Pope, who is in immigration custody and facing deportation to Nigeria.
