A Brooklyn attorney handling guardianship matters has been sentenced to a 1 1/2 to four-year prison term for stealing from a former ward after pleading guilty to the theft last year. Acting Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun (See Profile) sentenced Ray A. Jones Jr. yesterday for embezzling $200,000 from Josephine Robinson, a brain damaged woman whom Jones supervised for seven years.

In October, Jones pleaded guilty to second-degree grand larceny, a C felony, in People v. Jones, 4527/2011. Brooklyn prosecutors, who called for the maximum five- to 15-year sentence, previously said in court papers that through "layers of documents and transfers" Jones arranged for the funds to pay off a home equity line of credit established by his wife for a residence Jones once owned but later transferred to her (NYLJ, Dec. 3, 2012). The prosecution also pointed to Jones’ mishandling of another guardianship for a boy born with deformities. There, a judge said Jones had "squandered and wasted" the boy’s assets (NYLJ, May 25, 2011). However, he was not charged with a crime in that case.
