This is in response to the letter to the editor of David L. Greenberg of Schulte Roth & Zabel published on March 20, 2013 [" Empathy for Family and Prisoner"].

Greenberg’s conclusion that convicted murderer Terry Losicco not only deserves parole but our collective empathy seems baseless given the fact that he has no knowledge of the specifics of the case or the man who committed these heinous crimes. Certainly any societal impulse to allow our sympathies to shift to the murderer needs to be balanced against the direct harm that would be felt by the victim’s family. The pain of their loss, and the justified fear they have of Losicco’s potential release are very fresh and very real to them and all who were impacted by this most heinous crime.
