Joseph Kelner, a trial lawyer and founding partner of personal injury firm Kelner & Kelner, died on March 4. He was 98.

From the early days of his practice, Kelner focused on personal injury cases, winning several landmark cases in all areas of tort law. His 1992 victory in Harvey v. Mazal American Partners, a construction accident case, at the time was the highest-ever recovery in New York state at $14.3 million and was affirmed by the Court of Appeals. In that case, Kelner used his brain-damaged client as an exhibit when his client could not understand the oath to testify truthfully.
