In the upper chamber, Senator John Bonacic, R-Mount Hope, was reassigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee by Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre. Bonacic, 70, a Fordham University School of Law graduate and former Orange County assistant district attorney, has chaired the committee since 2011. He was elected to the Senate in 1998 after serving four terms in the Assembly.
The judiciary committees review nearly all legislation arising from the Office of Court Administration and play a vital role in whether those proposals advance to a vote before the Legislature. In addition, the Senate Judiciary Committee is tasked with reviewing judicial nominees, including those for the Court of Appeals.
