In an $8.2 billion transaction, NYSE Euronext, Inc., the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has agreed to sell itself to younger rival Intercontinental Exchange, Inc.

The deal brings to a close more than two centuries of the NYSE’s operation as an independent institution. It is the world’s largest stock exchange and bought the Euronext, which owns several European exchanges, six years ago.
