• Edward Shapiro has joined Reed Smith as a partner in the music industry practice. He previously practiced at Grubman Indursky Shire & Meiselas.

• Goldberg Segalla has hired Jill Owens as special counsel in White Plains in the business and commercial, product liability, and professional liability practices. She was counsel at Meiselman, Denlea, Packman, Carton & Eberz in White Plains.

• Michael Richman joined Hunton & Williams‘ bankruptcy, restructuring and creditors’ rights practice as a partner. He was a partner at Patton Boggs, where he chaired the bankruptcy practice.

• Rouse Properties Inc., an owner and operator of regional enclosed malls, has appointed Susan Elman as executive vice president and general counsel. She was senior vice president and deputy general counsel of Forest City Ratner Companies.

• Morgan, Lewis & Bockius has promoted three New York attorneys to the partnership: Vito Petretti, business and finance; Martha Stolley, litigation; and Eric Tajcher, business and finance.

• Duval & Stachenfeld has added Stephen Land as a partner. He was the former head of the U.S. tax practice at Linklaters.

• Belkin Burden Wenig & Goldman has hired Lisa Segal as of counsel in the real estate transactional department. She was an attorney at Citigroup Inc.

• Joseph Fields has joined McCarter & English as special counsel in the insurance coverage practice. He was counsel at Dickstein Shapiro’s commercial litigation practice.

• McKool Smith has added securities litigator Robert Scheef as a principal. He was of counsel at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.

• Tarter Krinsky & Drogin has added Deborah Piazza as a partner in the bankruptcy and corporate restructuring practice. She was a partner and chair of the bankruptcy department at Abrams Fensterman.

• Bressler, Amery & Ross has hired Jonathan Emery as a member, practicing in corporate business law and securities law. He was with Emery & Larsen.

• Risk management and investigations firm Stroz Friedberg has hired Scott Peeler as a managing director to lead a new compliance practice within the business intelligence and investigations division. He was a partner in the commercial litigation department of Chadbourne & Parke and a member of its white-collar defense.

• Axinn, Veltrop & Harkrider has added Donald Hawthorne as a partner in the litigation and regulatory group. He also will chair the practice in the areas of structured finance, derivatives and mortgage crisis litigation. Hawthorne was counsel at Debevoise & Plimpton.

• Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson senior partner Brad Scheler, who chairs the firm’s bankruptcy and restructuring practice, has been elected chairman of Lehigh University‘s board of trustees.

• John Kelly, a Nixon Peabody partner in the affordable housing practice, has been named chairman of the board of governors of the National Housing Conference, a nonprofit devoted to safe and affordable housing.
