Cabot Corporation, a specialty chemicals company, has agreed to purchase Dutch activated carbon maker Norit N.V. from British private equity firm Doughty Hanson & Co. Managers Limited and Dutch investment company Euroland Investments B.V. for $1.1 billion.

Activated carbons are performance materials used in environmental protection, food and beverages, air and water purification, pharmaceuticals and catalysts. Norit operates 10 manufacturing facilities throughout the Americas and Europe, generating $360 million in sales in 2011 and growing 12 percent annually since 2007.
