Hey, You Never Know! So goes one of the most successful slogans of the New York Lottery (NYL). Another slogan—”You’ve got to be in it to win it”—received new meaning from the Department of Justice on Dec. 22, 2011, when it released an opinion that finally gave the green light to U.S. Internet lottery sales. This “holiday” gift to the U.S. lottery industry has the potential to not only change the lottery world as we know it, but the entirety of U.S. gaming as well.

The New York Lottery

The NYL is the most successful lottery in North America. In 2011, it had more than $7 billion in sales and contributed almost $3 billion to the state’s lottery education fund. Games sold by the NYL include a combination of instant tickets (scratch-off tickets), daily games (3, 4, 5, and 10 number games, as well as a Keno-style game called Quick Draw), and weekly jackpot games (Mega Millions, Powerball, Lotto, and Sweet Millions). All of the NYL games are sold at one of the approximate 16,000 retailers around the state.
