The courts are adding more judges to handle arraignments because they are having trouble, in the wake of reduced weekend hours, meeting a standard that all arraignments take place within 24 hours of arrest.

Starting today, a third judge will be assigned in Manhattan and Brooklyn to handle arraignments on Fridays. They will join a judge added in each of those boroughs on Mondays a month ago after administrators reduced weekend hours by 50 percent in Brooklyn, 40 percent in the Bronx and Queens, 33 percent in Manhattan and 25 percent on Staten Island.
