Many readers may not be familiar with the Mental Hygiene Legal Service (MHLS), and may not be aware that it is an arm of the unified court system. This statewide agency, operating as four discrete entities under the aegis of each of the four Appellate Divisions, protects those citizens who, because of mental disease or defect, cannot protect themselves. The members of the MHLS staff are truly among the unsung heroes of our court system.

MHLS is the oldest and most comprehensive legal advocacy program for mentally disabled people in the United States. Its mission is to ensure that the liberty interests of its clients are not restricted to any extent greater than is absolutely necessary for their protection and the protection of others.
