On Dec. 16, 2010, Congress passed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. President Barack Obama signed the act into law on Dec. 17, 2010.

The act, among other things, reforms the federal estate tax, gift tax and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax laws for 2010 through 2012. It is important to note that the changes the act made regarding these taxes will expire on Dec. 31, 2012. Thus, absent further legislation, many of the federal laws regarding such taxes will revert on Jan. 1, 2013, to such laws as they existed prior to 2001. A chart that summarizes these changes made by the act and the effect on estate taxes, gift taxes and GST taxes after 2012 in the absence of any further legislation concerning these matters is included in this article.
