The passion for justice of Justice Steven W. Fisher was exemplified by his ruling in People v. Shih Wei Su. He cut through the procedural roadblocks put up by the Queens District Attorney’s Office to get to the truth, and ultimately it saved the life of a fine young man who had been wrongfully convicted.

During a period of public outrage against Asian youth gangs, Shih Wei Su was convicted of attempted murder in 1992 in Queens in connection with an alleged gang-related shooting. The key prosecution witness at trial, Jeffrey Tom, denied that he had any deal with the district attorney’s office for probation and youthful offender status in his own, unrelated arrest for extortion.
