A black Long Island homeowner whose conviction for manslaughter and gun possession in a racially charged case was upheld last week by the Appellate Division, Second Department, yesterday won a reprieve from entering prison. John H. White had received a two-to-four year prison term for fatally shooting a white teen who had arrived at Mr. White’s home with four other teens to challenge Mr. White’s 19-year-old son to a fight (NYLJ, May 24).

Yesterday, Judge Victoria A. Graffeo of the Court of Appeals extended the $200,000 bail that had been granted to Mr. White pending the Second Department’s ruling. According to his lawyer, Richard E. Mischel, the bail has been extended until Mr. White’s application for leave to take the appeal to the state’s high court is decided. – Daniel Wise
