Joseph L. Bruno, the most powerful Republican in the state Legislature from 1995 to 2008, was sentenced to two years in prison yesterday for his two federal felony convictions of mail fraud services theft. He also received three years of post-release supervision. Mr. Bruno spoke for nearly an hour about his life and accomplishments yesterday before his sentencing by Northern District Judge Gary L. Sharpe.

Judge Sharpe said in court that he waited in vain for Mr. Bruno to apologize during his comments yesterday, but that no such apology occurred. “I am proud of my public service, and I don’t believe that I have anything to apologize for,” Mr. Bruno told reporters after the sentencing.
