Cyrus R. Vance Jr., who will take over as Manhattan district attorney on Friday, has told two of the agency’s top officials they will be demoted, according to a source inside the office.

Nancy Ryan, the chief of the trial division, and Patrick J. Dugan, chief of the investigations division, have been notified that they no longer will oversee those functions although they apparently have been told that they could remain in the office as line prosecutors.
