Investment banker Bruce Wasserstein, the CEO of Lazard Ltd., died yesterday, a company spokeswoman said. Mr. Wasserstein, 61, a prominent Wall Street dealmaker who once owned the New York Law Journal and other affiliated legal publications, was hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat on Sunday. He took over as head of Lazard in 2002. He took the company public in 2005 and was named CEO.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Wasserstein began his career as an attorney at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. In addition to his work at Lazard, he served as chairman of Wasserstein & Co., a private investment firm. It has investments in companies ranging from Penton Media Inc., a publisher of trade magazines, to gourmet food seller Harry & David. Mr. Wasserstein also owned New York Media Holdings LLC, which publishes New York magazine. In July 2007, he sold American Lawyer Media, the Law Journal’s parent company, to Incisive Media for about $630 million in cash. Forbes magazine estimated Mr. Wasserstein’s net worth at $2 billion. - Associated Press
