Avi Schick, the former downstate president of the Empire State Development Corporation, has joined Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal as a litigation partner.

Before his appointment in 2007 by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer as a top official in development agency, Mr. Schick spent eight years at the Attorney General’s Office under Mr. Spitzer. While there, he rose to become a member of Mr. Spitzer’s executive team and led the litigation arising from the $225 billion nationwide settlement with the tobacco industry. He also led the state’s investigation into executive compensation practices at the New York Stock Exchange, resulting in a $100 million judgment—which was overturned on appeal—against the exchange’s chairman, Richard A. Grasso. Mr. Schick continues to serve, on the boards of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Governor’s Island Restoration and Education Corporation. — Daniel Wise
