Goodale, producer/host of the television program "Digital Age," writes that as a society, we long ago concluded that reputations of public officials have limited protection under the First Amendment. But the Yale law students whose reputations were destroyed by comments on an Internet bulletin board are not public figures. They are private individuals who may be unable to discover who defamed them, and who have no recourse against the site's administrators who refused to remove the comments.
