Attorneys for Nadine Menendez, the wife of Sen. Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, on Tuesday informed a federal judge that she was recently diagnosed with a medical condition that will not allow her to participate in the couple’s trial on bribery and extortion charges, which is currently scheduled for May 6.

Nadine Menendez’s lawyers at Schertler Onorato Mead & Sears asked U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein of the Southern District of New York to adjourn the trial with respect to their client, who pleaded not guilty in March to a superseding indictment charging her with bribery, extortion under color of official right, honest services wire fraud and obstruction of justice.
