The implementation of a landmark New York settlement that guarantees counsel for indigent criminal defendants in five counties has been extended another six months to allow lawyers for a class of plaintiffs to continue with their follow-up lawsuit if caseloads remain high.

An Albany state court’s Hurrell-Harring settlement order of 2015 was extended to March 31, 2024, as a result of an Oct. 17 agreement between parties in a subsequent December lawsuit filed by the New York Civil Liberties Union, Schulte Roth & Zabel, and Felicello Law.
