On June 14, the European Parliament approved the Artificial Intelligence Act (the E.U. AI Act), a sweeping regulatory framework on par with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that creates guidelines and prohibitions concerning the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The E.U. AI Act now proceeds to the so-called “trilogue” process, an informal negotiation involving members of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission.  The trilogue process can take months, however, and the E.U. AI Act has been under consideration since it was first proposed in April 2021.
