The highest local court in the District of Columbia on Thursday declined to define the scope of employment for the President of the United States, sending the issue back to the New York federal courts for potential factfinding in a defamation lawsuit over statements former President Donald Trump made while in office.

The D.C. Court of Appeals said it could not make a definitive legal ruling, explaining that the question was dependent upon specific facts of the case.
