White-collar attorneys say the newly announced voluntary self-disclosure policy for U.S. attorneys’ offices will bring clarity and predictability for clients facing legal troubles—and will likely bring the U.S. Department of Justice closer to its long-held goal of encouraging companies to disclose shortly after they discover potential wrongdoing.

Jodi Avergun, chair of the white-collar defense and investigations practice at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, said the policy will allow companies to expect the same result regardless of the district in which they make a disclosure.
