As the possible appointment of Appellate Division, Second Department Presiding Justice Hector LaSalle as chief judge of the Court of Appeals heads into the legislative arena, statements by those in favor of the justice’s appointment and those opposed have proffered sometimes imprecise or vague information regarding the role of the State Senate. 

Because I believe the arguments of the two camps must be made within a legal framework, understanding the process is important.
