A rare and possibly history-making trial opened Monday in a Manhattan courtroom, as prosecutors with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office began their case against a man who has been called one of the most prolific recruiters for English-speaking violent jihadists worldwide.

“The defendant not only talked the talk but walked the walk along the road he paved to terrorism,” Assistant District Attorney Gary Galperin told jurors during his opening statements in the people’s case against Shaikh Abdullah el-Faisal.
