Michael Gerrard is one of the foremost environmental lawyers in the nation—an advocate, litigator, teacher, scholar, and leader who has pioneered the use of cutting-edge legal tools to combat the global climate crisis.

In many ways, Michael’s distinguished and broad-reaching career has closely tracked the field of environmental law itself. He began his career at one of the first law firms focused on environmental and land use law. Just a few years after graduating law school, he took leave from practice to advise both New York City Mayor Ed Koch and MTA Chairman Richard Ravitch on transit projects and policy. Between 1994 and 2008, he practiced at Arnold & Porter, where he served as partner-in-charge of the firm’s New York office from 2007 to 2008, before transitioning to senior counsel—a position he continues to hold today.
