A former western New York trial court judge who resigned amid charges he accepted a bribe from a county political official was formally sentenced in Buffalo federal court on Tuesday.

Former New York State Supreme Court Justice John A. Michalek, 71, was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for his role in the bribery scheme that influenced judicial decisions and official appointments. Among the allegations was that the politico facilitated Michalek’s elevation to a seat on the Appellate Division.
