New York City Department of Correction Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi has made a plea for defender organizations and prosecutors, and, in effect, the courts, to use “every available option” to reduce the city’s jail population as the COVID-19 positivity rate inside the jails has leaped from 1% to 17% in just 10 days.

“I implore you to ask the courts to … consider every available option to reduce the number of individuals in our jail,” Schiraldi said in a four-paragraph letter he sent to defender organizations and the city’s district attorney offices, according to a Legal Aid Society spokesman who provided a copy of the letter.
