New York City employers using artificial intelligence to promote or screen job candidates will soon be required to subject their tools to bias auditing every year, thanks to a new law now on the books in the Big Apple.

The measure, passed by the New York City Council on Nov. 10, takes effect Jan. 2, 2023. It also requires employers to notify candidates if AI was used to make hiring decisions. Penalties for violating the law are $500 for first-time violations, and up to $1,500 for repeat offenses.
