Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Tuesday authorizing courts to expand remote court hearings in New York City, amid a deepening security and humanitarian crisis at the Rikers Island jail.

The executive order, Hochul’s office said, would increase the number of virtual court appearances for detainees, expedite court proceedings and allow corrections staff to be reallocated from transportation to housing supervision at the notorious New York City jail.
