A former federal prosecutor who most recently served as senior counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law is the newest magistrate judge in the Eastern District of New York, court officials have announced.

Taryn Merkl joined the Brennan Center, where she made policy recommendations and conducted criminal justice research, after more than 16 years as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of New York.
