Hundreds of protesters were left severely injured last year after authorities used “extreme violence” and militarized tactics during demonstrations over the death of Daniel Prude, according to a class action lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.

Prude, a Black man, died after an encounter with Rochester police in which he lost consciousness after authorities pinned him to the pavement. Footage of the police encounter only became public months after his death, sparking national attention and days of protests.
