Cornell Law Dean Eduardo Peñalver has been named the next president of Seattle University.

University leaders announced the appointment Thursday. Peñalver has led Cornell’s law school since 2014, and will be the first layperson and first Latino to lead Seattle University, which is a 130-year-old Jesuit institution. His is set to assume that post July 1, 2021, succeeding president Stephen Sundborg. Sundborg is stepping down after leading the university for 24 years.
