The high court settled the issue of same-sex marriage in the 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges. But ancillary disputes remain that could make headlines in 2018. There’s the Masterpiece Cakeshop case asking whether a baker can refuse to serve a same-sex couple on religious grounds. Cases from New York and Georgia will test whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Also before the court is a case from Houston asking whether city governments can deny marital benefits to same-sex couples.
