Editor’s note The National Law Journal is proud to present the winners of this year’s showcase of litigators at the top of their game. The 10 finalists were culled from scores of nominations sent from around the United States. Our basic criteria included nominees having at least one significant win either a bench or jury verdict within the last 18 months, and a track record of significant wins over the last several years. “Significant wins” is an expansive and subjective term. For our purposes, it includes large monetary awards, or, from the other side of the aisle, winning a defense verdict when there is the risk of substantial damages. Steve Fromm, Managing Editor THE 2007 WINNERS LEORA BEN-AMI An IP litigator keeps it simple for the jury, and wins a $65.2M verdict. DAVID J. CHIZEWER and FREDERICK H. COHEN Two attorneys take over a case at the last minute, and win $334 million. JOHN M. DESMARAIS A $1.53B infringement win made possible by an attorney’s hand signals. KENNETH A. GALLO Defender puts a human face on giant corporations sued by an individual. DANIEL J. GERBER A lawyer uses voir dire to expose jurors to some unsavory allegations. DIANE P. SULLIVAN Humor, good graphics help secure crucial defense verdicts in a Vioxx trial. DAN K. WEBB A $58 million win for Verizon was all about the jury grasping the details. REID H. WEINGARTEN An attorney switches from white-collar crime to an explosive rape case. MARK S. WERBNER A lawyer uses a surprise to help win a $200M feud between two brothers STEVEN M. ZAGER A simple message connects with jurors, producing a $152.7M verdict. • Past winners One hundred and eighty-four lawyers have appeared over the years in The National Law Journal‘s Winning special report.
