Criminal charges filed this week against three government employees over the Flint water crisis come as many state and local officials are fighting off civil cases by hiring their own attorneys and, in some cases, already moving to dismiss the litigation.

On April 20, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced the first criminal charges to come out of a scandal that has shined a wide spotlight on government officials in the city of Flint, the state of Michigan and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Some testified last month on Capitol Hill.
