U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez has moved to change the venue of his bribery trial from Newark to Washington federal district court, claiming he can’t get a fair trial in his home state.

Menendez and co-defendant Salomon Melgen on May 11 moved to change the venue of their trial on charges that Melgen gave gifts to the senator in exchange for using the power of his office to benefit Melgen’s financial and personal interests. The motion said part of the reason the venue should be changed is that the largest number of witnesses in the case are located in Washington, and most of the events at issue in the case took place there.
