A U.S. Department of Justice memo explaining the legal justification for the targeted killing of an American citizen in Yemen was released Monday under court order.

U.S. drone strikes in 2011 killed suspected terrorist Anwar Al-Aulaqi, an American citizen. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit today published a redacted version of the July 16, 2010, memo from the Office of Legal Counsel on Monday. The court sided with The New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union, which sued over access to documents concerning the strikes.
