Take unusually complex technical and economic issues. Mix them with a case of first impression and a team of Sidley Austin patent lawyers. The result: a landmark ruling, just one of several recent major victories for the firm that will resonate in the intellectual property world for some time.

David Pritikin, chairman of Sidley’s national IP practice, and partners Richard Cederoth, Brian Nester, David Giardina and Ellen Robbins joined with Seattle’s Calfo Harrigan Leyh & Eakes in Microsoft Corp. v. Motorola Inc. They scored a jury verdict last fall that Motorola breached its commitments to standards organizations to license certain of its basic essential patents on reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms. The verdict followed “one of the first instances in which any court has set guidelines on how to value inventions alleged to be used in industrywide standards,” Pritikin said.
