A top lawyer at Butzel Long who helped the firm seek government relief from its pension fund obligations in January has jumped to Dickinson Wright.
Jordan Schreier, who served as vice president and a member of Butzel Long’s board of directors until last year, joins Dickinson Wright’s employee benefits practice. Schreier was the leader of the employee benefits group from 1995 to 2010 at Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Butzel Long.
He also served as Butzel Long’s legal counsel in its filing with the Pension Benefits Guaranty Corp. earlier this year, he said. In an usual move for a law firm, Butzel Long sought relief from its payment obligation under its pension fund, valued at about $33 million. As of the filing on January 19, the firm had a shortfall of about $9 million.
The firm, which has about 140 lawyers, lost roughly 100 attorneys between 2008 and 2011.
Schreier said that his departure was not related to the firm’s pension fund filing or its decrease in headcount. He said the pension filing was a "very positive development" for Butzel Long and that the firm’s size has "stabilized" within the last year.
"I’d been at Butzel Long for 22 years," he said. "I was ready for a new challenge." Schreier joins four other attorneys in the employee benefits group at Dickinson, he said. Another attorney is expected to join Dickinson’s practice group in coming weeks, he said. He declined to comment on whether that attorney was from Butzel Long.
Justin Klimko, president of Butzel Long, did not respond to messages seeking comment about Schreier’s departure.
