When the U.S. government decided it would award billions of dollars to automobile companies to help them meet higher fuel efficiency standards, the Energy Department turned to Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison to be one of its advisers.

As part of the $13.7 million the U.S. government awarded Paul Weiss during the past five fiscal years, the firm was awarded $7.2 million from the Energy Department for its help with almost $2 billion in loans to Nissan North America Inc. and Tesla Motors Inc. as part of the agency’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. Nissan and Tesla put their awards toward updating their U.S. factories to produce electric vehicles.
