Last year was a busy one for the more than 140 attorneys in Covington & Burling’s intellectual property practice. In addition to litigation before federal district courts nationwide and the International Trade Commission, the firm was actively engaged in congressional negotiations surrounding the American Invents Act, which reshaped the patent process for the first time in more than half a century. With infringement claims and electronic piracy on the rise, the firm has its own in-house Internet investigation team that combines attorneys’ legal knowledge with that of technology specialists.
Robert Haslam, a Redwood Shores, Calif.-based partner, scored a big win for client Huawei Technologies, a Chinese telecommunications company. Motorola Inc. added Huawei as a defendant in a suit originally brought against Lemko Corp., alleging that Huawei had colluded with Lemko to misappropriate Motorola’s proprietary mobile base station technology.
