Richard Cauley was a partner in the Palo Alto, Calif., office of McDermott Will & Emery when he learned that a California boutique firm was looking for someone to lead its patent litigation practice.

The boutique specialized in representing clients from Asia. Cauley had never represented an Asian client before, but knew that businesses from that region, particularly in China and Taiwan, were getting sued more often in U.S. courts for patent infringement. They needed someone to turn to, and he didn’t think the big firms in Silicon Valley had the answer.
