A Massachusetts Medical Society survey concluded that so-called defensive medicine, or doctors' use of tests, procedures and referrals to avoid lawsuits, costs the state at least $1.4 billion. The survey asked the doctors how often they ordered various tests or treatments, including X-rays, specialty referrals or hospital admissions, because they were concerned about liability. According to the study results, 83% of the 838 respondents practice defensive medicine.
