Alternative dispute resolution firms in California would be enticed to prove their compliance with ethical standards under state legislation unveiled Wednesday.

Senate Bill 940 by state Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, would allow the state bar to create a voluntary program where ADRs verify that they follow ethical mandates set out in the California Rules of Court. Firms would also have to show that they have procedures in place to ensure neutrals’ compliance with those rules, to handle complaints from parties and to remedy any missteps by their professionals.
