The International Court of Justice is expected to issue a ruling soon in the closely watched, high-profile case that South Africa has brought against Israel alleging the country is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza—charges Israel vehemently denies.

Israel’s military campaign has left an estimated 23,000 Palestinians dead, about 1% of Gaza’s population, according to UN estimates. But Israel says it is not attempting to wipe out the Palestinian people—that it is fighting a war of self-defense against Hamas, which murdered, raped and mutilated about 1,200 people and took 240 hostages when it crossed the border into Israel on Oct. 7.
