Lawyers for former President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court Wednesday to reject Special Counsel Jack Smith’s request that the justices quickly decide the issue of presidential immunity before a March trial date over Trump’s efforts to interfere in the 2020 election.

Smith, Trump’s legal team argued in new papers, is asking the court to bypass its “ordinary procedures, including the longstanding preference for prior consideration by at least one court of appeals, and rush to decide the issues with reckless abandon.”
