Judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, weighing Wisconsin’s request to recover attorney fees from ex-Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell, zeroed in on whether courts have jurisdiction to consider sanctions motions after an appellate mandate has been issued.

U.S. District Judge Pamela Pepper denied Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers’ request last year to recover $106,000 in attorney fees. Pepper said the court lacked jurisdiction to consider the motion because it was made two months after the Seventh Circuit issued its mandate upholding the dismissal of Trump’s underlying lawsuit, which alleged fraud in the 2020 election results.
